Joseph Smith was Smith’s father, and he worked for United Press International in Paris. In 1966, she relocated to Washington, D.C. Her father was the first official obituary editor at The Washington Post in Washington, D.C. Martha Mayor is her mother’s name. Her mother worked as a paper conservator at the Smithsonian Institution’s Freer and Sackler Galleries. Later, her parents divorced. Smith’s family was given the name “upper crust, and set aside.
