Thomas Hawley Tuberville was born on September 18, 1954, in Camden, Arkansas. He is the youngest of Charles and Olive Tuberville’s three children. In 1972, he graduated from Camden’s Harmony Grove High School and went on to Southern Arkansas University. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from there in 1976.

Tuberville began coaching football at Hermitage High School after graduating from Southern Arkansas University (Hermitage, AR). Before going to Arkansas State University, where he was an assistant football coach from 1980 to 1984, he spent two years as an assistant coach and two years as a head coach.
He started working as a graduate assistant at the University of Miami in 1986. He went on to become the defensive coordinator for the Miami Hurricanes, the university’s football team, in 1993. Tuberville coached future Hall of Famers Ray Lewis and Warren Sapp, as well as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, during his tenure. He also played a key role in the team’s three AP national titles.
