Early Life

Bette Nesmith Graham and Warren Audrey Nesmith gave birth to Michael Nesmith in 1942. Houston, Texas, is the city where he was born. He is noted for being the only child of his parents, who divorced when he was four years old. He moved to Dallas with his mother in order to be closer to his parents, aunts, sister, and grandmother. Michael Nesmith began his recording career in 1963 with the release of a single on the Highness label. Furthermore, in 1965, he released a one-off single on Edan Records, which was followed by two further recoded singles. One of them, titled “The New Recruit” under the name “Michael Blessing,” was released on Colpix Records, unexpectedly to Davy Jones’ label; nonetheless, they did not meet until The Monkees were founded. He also began performing at folk clubs in the Los Angeles area, and landed a notable gig as the “Hostmaster” for the Monday night hootenannies at The Troubadour, a West Hollywood nightclub that featured new performers. Nesmith studied American History and Music History as a part-time student at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Around 1972, he co-founded the record company Countryside Records with Jac Holzman, a co-founder of Elektra Records.
