Career

Starks spent his career with six different teams in three different leagues. He began his career with the Golden State Warriors, then moved on to the Continental Basketball Association, where he played for the Cedar Rapids Silver Bullets in 1989-90, and the World Basketball League, where he played for the Memphis Rockers in 1990-91. With the New York Knicks, Starks returned to the NBA with a little bit of luck on his side. During one practice session, he attempted to dunk against Nick’s center Patrick Ewing and failed miserably. As Ewing dragged him down, Starks’ knee was twisted and he was injured. The team couldn’t trade him until he was fully recovered by the end of December, as stipulated in his contract. And that’s how it went down. The Knicks were unable to release him since he had not recovered at that time. Starks was given a second opportunity as a result of this incident, and he has referred to Ewing as his savior. From 1990 until 1998, he was the starting shooting guard and a major member of the team, spending eight seasons in New York with colleagues Anthony Mason and Charles Oakley. Starks executed one of the most iconic plays in Knicks history, “The Dunk,” when he dunked over Horace Grant against the Chicago Bulls. In 1998, his time with the Knicks came to an end. He was subsequently traded back to his previous team, the Golden State Warriors, in 1999, where he stayed for almost a year until being traded to the Chicago Bulls the following year for only four games in the 1999-2000 season. After failing to make an NBA team after playing with the Utah Jazz from 2000 to 2002, Starks retired from the game. Starks is currently employed by the Knicks as an alumnus and fan development representative. As a game analyzer, he also offers his services. John Starks: My Life, his autobiography, was published in 2004.

Relationship

His time at Rogers State was cut short when he was expelled for stealing a student’s stereo in retribution for a fight with a student who broke into Starks’ dorm room, for which he and his roommates filed charges against the college for the damage. He was transferred to Northern Oklahoma College after this incident and joined the basketball team there. For the robbery, he was sentenced to five days in jail, which he served over his spring vacation. Starks was released from the facility after committing another offense of possession and use of an illegal substance (cannabis). Starks had a partner in his Wife, Jackie, while he went through these ups and downs. On December 13, 1986, they married. They had one son and two daughters, John Starks ., Chelsea Starks, and Tiara Starks, soon after. Former University coach Ken Trickey had taken notice of John and was intending to launch a basketball program at Oklahoma Junior College.
