Early Life

Jeffrey Adam Zucker was born on April 9, 1965, to a Jewish household in Miami, Florida. Mathew Zucker, his father, was a cardiologist, and Arline Zucker, his mother, was a high school teacher. He was a tennis player and attended North Miami Senior High School. He also worked as a freelance reporter for The Miami Herald and was the editor of the school newspaper. Jeff has been a leader since he was a child, serving as president of his sophomore, junior, and senior classes. In 1982, he received his diploma from the institution. He went to Harvard University after finishing high school, where he was the president of the school newspaper, the Harvard Crimson. In 1986, he received his Bachelor of Arts in American History.

Career

After being employed as a researcher by NBC in 1986, Jeff began his professional career. He stayed there for three years until landing a job as a field producer for the Today show. At the age of 26, he became the show’s executive producer in 1992.  Jeff was in charge of the show during its most successful years,  he is credited with directing it to 16 years of ratings dominance. In the year 2000, he was named president of NBC Entertainments. He managed the whole entertainment calendar under his direction, and he made significant adjustments to the network. Under his leadership, NBC’s operating earnings increased from $532 million in 2000 to $870 million in 2003. He also held positions at NBC, including head of the Entertainment, News & Cable Group, president and CEO of the NBC Television Group, and president and CEO of NBC Universal. He was paid $30-$40 million when he departed the network in June 2010. After leaving NBC, he went on to produce Katie, a Disney-ABC Domestic Television show hosted by Katie Couric. In January 2013, he was named president of CNN Worldwide, and he quit the show.  CNN’s primetime and daytime viewership increased in 2014 under his leadership. The rise continued, and the network’s daytime and primetime audience quickly surpassed MSNBC’s. By October 2014, it had risen to second place, trailing only FOX News Channel. CNN received an average of 105 million monthly visitors on its mobile and web properties in 2016. Zucker is still the head of CNN Worldwide, and he was named chairman of Warner Media News & Sports in March 2019.

Relationship

Jeff is a husband and father, having married in 1996. He married Caryn Nathanson, the then-supervisor of Saturday Night Live. Caryn and Jeff have a total of four children: three males and one daughter. They agreed to separate in 2018, but they agreed to care for their children together. Zucker was first diagnosed with colon cancer in 1996, and then again in 1999. He had two surgeries and received chemotherapy after the first. In 2018, he underwent heart surgery and had to step down as CNN’s president to recover.
