Career

In 1971, Erno Rubik began his work as an architectural lecturer at the Budapest College of Applied Arts. He designed the first functional version of the Rubik’s Cube in 1974 during this period. The cube was originally built of wood and rubber bands, which allowed the components to move without breaking. He chose wood because it was readily accessible at the university’s workshop and because it was a basic material that didn’t necessitate the use of heavy machinery. To keep the cube together, the earliest prototypes were created by hand, drilling holes and cutting wood. The structure of the cube appealed to the university students, who felt it would appeal to a wide audience. In Hungary, the Rubik’s cube was previously known as the “magic cube.” He sold the cube to Ideal Toys in the United States in 1979. The Magic cube was renamed Rubik’s cube the next year before being exposed to an international audience. The cube was an instant hit throughout the world, winning multiple international prizes and becoming a part of popular culture in the 1980s. Erno Rubik also created Rubik’s Magic, Rubik’s Snake, and Rubik’s 360, in addition to the Rubik’s cube. He was also the editor of the periodical Ésjátek in the 1980s. He launched the Rubik Studio in 1983, where he explored and produced a number of innovative games.
