Emily Drinkard was born in Newark, New Jersey on September 30, 1933. Her parents were Nicholas and Delia Mae Drinkard, and she was their eighth and last child. Except for her, she had four elder brothers, William, Hansom, Nicky, and Larry, and three older sisters, Lee, Marie, and Larry, who are all gone. Her mother died at the age of five after having a stroke, and her father died at the age of eight from stomach cancer. Her older sister was the one who raised her.Cissy and her siblings were raised in the church, and their parents encouraged them to sing, and she was born again at the age of fourteen. South Side High School was her alma mater.


Houston began singing at the age of five. Her eldest siblings, Anne, Larry, and Nicky, formed the Drinkard Four, a singing group that used to perform at their New Hope Baptist Church. Later, Lee and Marie joined the group, renaming it The Drinkard Singers, and recording the album A Joyful Noise. In 1963, Houston established Sweet Inspirations with Doris Troy and Dee Dee Warwick to offer backing vocals for musicians such as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and her niece Dionne Warwick, among others. Her final appearance with Sweet Inspirations was as a backup vocalist for Elvis Presley, following which she opted to pursue a career as a recording artist in order to spend more time with her children.Before founding Sweet Inspirations, she had a few singles that she recorded in 1967. In 1969, Commonwealth United Records signed her to a contract and released her album, Presenting Cissy Houston, which had songs like “I’ll Be There” and “Be My Baby.” She then joined with Janus Records in 1970, where she made many albums and singles, until signing with Private Stock Records in 1977. With this, she recorded her disco hit “Think it Over,” and later in 1980, she published “Step Aside for a Lady,” her second disco album, this time through Columbia Records.


Houston has been in two marriages during her life. Freddie Garland was her first spouse, whom she married in 1955. They had a son together, Gary Garland, however their marriage was short-lived, as they divorced in 1957. She married her second husband, John Russell Houston, in 1959, and they had a son, Michael Houston, and a daughter, Whitney Houston, who was a well-known singer until she died in 2012.
